About
Throughout American history, governmental efforts to increase authority have often come at the cost of individual freedoms. The ACLU-WV is dedicated to ensuring that such overreach does not occur and actively resists it when it does. This organization focuses solely on safeguarding the fundamental civil rights of all individuals in West Virginia, particularly those groups that have historically faced oppression. Since its inception more than fifty years ago, ACLU-WV has earned a reputation as West Virginia's leading advocate for personal liberties.
The American Civil Liberties Union made its debut in West Virginia back in 1920 during miners’ struggles for labor rights against coal mine owners who sought to suppress their organizing efforts; this led to mass arrests of miners and their allies. In response, the ACLU dispatched legal representation from afar. Notably, during World War II’s surge of nationalism in 1943, they defended several school children before the U.S. Supreme Court against a school board mandate requiring them to pledge allegiance contrary to their religious beliefs—a victory among many throughout our history.
Today’s landscape presents both persistent challenges and emerging threats; developments in technology can either safeguard or undermine our liberties while timeworn issues like racism and injustice linger on societal fringes. During crises—national conflicts or turmoil—First Amendment protections alongside privacy rights often face significant jeopardy first among all civil privileges threatened.West Virginians can rely on ACLU-WV's unwavering commitment: realizing everyone’s Bill of Rights assures greater inclusivity across society.
