About
Founded 1976
In 1976, a group of women in the legal field united to connect and explore the challenges faced by women within the law, particularly in Louisiana. At that time, there were only approximately 300 female attorneys practicing in the state. This gathering led to the establishment of what is now known as the Association for Women Attorneys (AWA). Officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1985, AWA serves as an invaluable source for information sharing, networking opportunities, and supportive community among New Orleans' legal professionals. Our diverse membership encompasses various segments of this community—including public and private sector lawyers specializing in civil or criminal law; judges; academics; corporate counsel; law clerks; and aspiring attorneys—who frequently come together to exchange experiences and pursue shared objectives. The AWA hosts monthly meetups at downtown eateries along with an ethics-focused continuing legal education (CLE) session every September and an annual dinner each January. Our mission centers around three key goals: (1) promoting communication amongst members; (2) encouraging women's active involvement in economic and social leadership roles within our communities; and (3) enhancing both their professional interests across all levels of legal practice while also elevating their societal status overall.
