About
Founded 1992
Established in 1992 at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, The African-American Law & Policy Report (ALPR) was initiated as a vital platform to tackle legal and policy matters significant to the African American community. Its lineage can be traced back to the Black Law Journal—now recognized as the National Black Law Journal—which began its journey in 1971 at UCLA School of Law. This original publication represented a unified effort among students from various law schools who collaborated on individual editions with support from UCLA and their respective institutions. Notably, in 1987, both UCLA and Berkeley joined forces for a combined edition of this journal. Just five years later marked a transformative moment when ALPR was launched, allowing Berkeley law students to deepen their engagement with Black legal scholarship systematically. In its inaugural year of publication in 1994, ALPR stood out as one of only three dedicated Black law journals nationwide. As it evolved over time, particularly by 2023 it proudly embraced its new identity as The Berkeley Journal of Black Law & Policy (JBLP).
