I obtained my JD from Harvard Law School in 1968 and began my career at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, serving until 1969. Following that, I collaborated with Marian Wright Edelman at the Washington Research Project—an organization that eventually evolved into the Children's Defense Fund—from 1969 to 1973. I enjoyed a period of solo practice between 1973 and 1977 as well as resuming solo work again in 2005 onward. From 1977 through to early this century, I managed employment discrimination cases for the Lawyers' Committee on Civil Rights Under Law before joining Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP as a partner from 2001 until mid-2005 when I returned once more to independent practice. In addition to my legal work, during August of both years from late summer of '11 till '12, I presided over the Labor and Employment Law Section for American Bar Association (ABA), which boasted membership numbers nearing twenty-six thousand—making it one of ABA's largest sections by participation rate!
