This article is about the news that just came out regarding Christine Lee & Co Solicitors LTD. The owner of the law firm, Christine Lee, has been accused of being a spy by MI5, one of Britain’s spy agencies.
The law firm has two addresses, one in London and one in Birmingham.
The story combined two topics I find interesting, lawyers and spies. But there was something I found confusing right out of the gate. The Daily Mail reported the below.
Source: Daily Mail
This was confusing because it appears that Christine Lee, a lawyer in the UK, was the legal adviser for the Chinese embassy in London.
This means that everyone should have known that she worked for the government of China. In fact, it was her duty as a lawyer to represent the best interests of her client, the Chinese government.
When someone hires a lawyer, that lawyer is meant to do everything in their power to advance their client’s interests. A lawyer must be completely loyal to their client.
That lawyer has a duty to do everything they can do (legally) to get their client out of trouble.

On the other side, the prosecutor will put forward their best effort to prove that the accused should be found guilty of rape.
Then it’s up to the jury or judge to decide. That’s how the British common law system works.
The story of Christine Lee & Co Solicitors has blown up all over England, and people are shocked. Barry Gardiner, a British politician took £600k from Christine Lee & Co Solicitors in campaign donations.
And once the story came out that Christine Lee is being accused of being a Chinese agent, the public shot allegations at Barry Gardiner.
Read these fun articles about the law:
Which company giving large political contributions doesn’t expect something in return? The fact that Christine Lee was a lawyer for the Chinese government makes her an agent. Everyone should have known that.
A lawyer is an agent of sorts for their client. It is possible that Ms. Lee was not arrested because she was representing her client during her actions. We will have to see what happens.
Christine Lee & Co Solicitors LTD’s Google Maps account was quickly given many 1-star reviews by the public.
I shared my views that this was a stupid story on social media, and was immediately accused of being a communist agent myself.
Oh well. I will keep trying to educate the public about legal issues, whether they want to hear it or not.
