Ms. Smithey is an accomplished educator specializing in Employment and Labor Law, having led seminars and courses at various law schools. She has made significant contributions to the field through numerous publications focusing on both Employment and Labor Law as well as civil litigation. As a contributing author for the Maryland Rules Commentary, she also shares her expertise regularly with members of the Metropolitan Washington Employment and Labor Lawyers Association via their newsletter. Boasting nearly two decades of experience as an attorney in this legal area, Ms. Smithey is actively involved with professional organizations including the Maryland State Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section, along with affiliations to other associations such as the District of Columbia Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, American Bar Association, Women's Bar Association of Maryland, National Employment Lawyers’ Organization, and Maryland’s own community for employment lawyers. Her commitment extends beyond private practice; Ms. Smithey engages extensively in pro bono services relating to labor issues—serving on hotlines offered by organizations like Women’s Law Center while teaching within programs designed to empower workplace rights knowledge among underrepresented groups. Academically trained at Boston University School of Law where she wrote her thesis titled “Housing Discrimination Against People with Mental Disabilities: How does the Fair Housing Amendment Act of 1988 Help Implement Goals of Deinstitutionalization?”, she also holds a Bachelor’s degree from Pepperdine University – achievements that set a strong foundation for her legal career across multiple jurisdictions including admission into practices in Maryland; Washington D.C.; New Hampshire; alongside access granted by The U.S Supreme Court after previously practicing law both locally in Baltimore & regionally throughout New Hampshire before becoming partners at Rifkin Weiner Livingston Levitan & Silver LLC.
