Our lawyer reviews are reviewed to make sure they are accurate. Unlike other lawyer review and rating services, we don’t want stupid reviews.
The review should reflect someone’s genuine experience at the law firm. If you never talked to a law firm, you shouldn’t do a review. Below is an example of a bad attorney review.
“Lawyer X doesn’t offer pro bono legal services. I asked them to work on my case for free, and they didn’t.”
It’s not a good review because it’s unreasonable. It’s also unreasonable to expect attorneys to take legal aid. Some law firms accept it, and others don’t.
What makes a good lawyer?
We believe some of the below make for a lawyer that should get 4-to-5-star reviews.
The lawyer was easy to book a consultation with
This could be more for the process of the law firm. For example, when you filled out the contact form on the lawyer’s profile, someone quickly contacted you.
When the intake manager contacted you, it didn’t take long to set down a time and date to meet with the lawyer.
The consultation gave you the pricing and next steps
Don’t expect to resolve all your legal issues during the consultation. That’s not the point of the consultation.
It’s more like a two-way interview. You are trying to figure out if this lawyer is the right one for you. You want to know the cost and what the next steps are.
But believe it or not, the lawyer is also interviewing you. They are trying to figure out if you will be a good client who is easy to work with.
And of course, they want the clients who pay their bills. Good lawyers will walk away from bad clients.
But make sure at the end of the consult that you have a ballpark idea of the cost.
Sometimes the lawyer won’t be able to give that to you. But you should at least know how much the retainer is and the hourly rate.
The retainer agreement was quickly sent to you
You would be surprised how many attorneys drop the ball after the consultation. For some reason, they say they will send an engagement letter (or retainer agreement) but they forget.
If a lawyer is too lazy or disorganized to send you a request for payment, chances are they are not the lawyer you want to hire.
You received what you paid for
And of course, after you hired the law firm, they delivered. Keep in mind what the lawyer had control over, and what they did not.
For example, you might have wanted your lawsuit to resolve in a few months.
But due to the other side and the court’s availability, it might have taken years. This likely would not have been your attorney’s fault.
Your attorney should have acted quickly when the ball was on their side. Some things in the courts take a very long time. Don’t assume it’s your lawyer’s fault.
Be careful leaving a review for pricing issues
The law firm might have charged you $8000 for the month, but is that not reasonable? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t.
You need to check the engagement letter and then check the invoice. Lawyer’s rarely lie about the number of hours they work.
Let’s say the attorney’s hourly rate is $500 because they have 25 years of experience. You were okay with that hourly rate at the start because you wanted the best.
During the month, you can see they did 10 hours of work on your file, which is not much. You can expect an invoice for $5000.
If they did twenty hours of work, it would have been $10,000.
A one-day hearing in court can easily be twenty hours of work.
Lawyer Ratings Because of The Invoice
Why? Because the hearing itself will be around eight hours of work. But there will be at least twelve hours of work to get ready for the hearing.
Your lawyer will need to prepare a court brief (an Application or Application Response) and an affidavit. This will take a great majority of the time.
There will also be correspondence with the opposing party.
And the day before the hearing, your lawyer will need to prepare their talking points. Or if they are good, they will just highlight parts of the Application.
Sometimes hiring a more senior lawyer can save you money, because they don’t need as much time to prepare for the hearing. They are more confident.
Lawyers’ ratings allow the public to pick the right lawyer for them, according to city, budget, and area of law.
Peer review ratings
Peer review ratings are allowed. But it should be clear that you were not a client. A lawyer can rate another lawyer, and explain how they worked together, or against each other.

For client review ratings, you should explain what area of practice you hired the attorney for. For example, you hired them for a real estate law matter.
If it’s for something like a divorce, you don’t have to say. You can just talk about your experience with the law firm generally.
If you have a lot to say about your experience going through the justice system with a law firm, you might want to write a blog.
You can write a 500-word plus article that the public can learn from. This helps others learn from their mistakes and victories.

Online reviews matter more these days than they did five years ago. According to a survey, 65% of people trust online reviews and use them to make purchase decisions.
Five years ago people thought all online reviews were fake. Once people see a review online, then they go check out the company’s social media or website.
It’s all connected.
The reason why online reviews are so popular is that people are connected these days. Everything is digital and right there.

What Should You Do If You Get a Bad Review?
There are the three A’s you need to know about. They stand for acknowledge, apologize, and action.
This is what a PR company will teach you.
First, you acknowledge the review, and make sure they are heard.
Then you apologize and talk about what action you are going to take.
This is what you should do if the review was real. But what about if you get a review from a fake person or a competitor?

We don’t think you should apologize. Maybe someone says “I hired this lawyer and it was the worst experience of my life. I got sentenced to jail because of them.”
The problem is, you don’t do criminal law. You should just talk about how there is no one by that name that ever contacted your firm. And further, point out that you don’t do criminal law.
Don’t get angry, just make it clear that this is not a real review.
You don’t want to ignore reviews. You want to show that the company is trying to get better.
Lawyers’ rating sites help the public pick a lawyer and give them confidence in that trust.
Below is an example of a good lawyer review and rating:
“I contacted law firm Y about my lawsuit. Then I spoke to the intake team, and I answered questions for about ten minutes. I then booked a time with a lawyer to call me. The lawyer was ten minutes late in calling.
But once I spoke to attorney J, then they were able to give me amazing advice.”
The above is a bit long, so a short review could be like this:
“Lawyer John Doe was late calling me, but was helpful once we were able to connect.”
Just like in court, keep to the facts. Let the public know what happened, good or bad. You can also pick a starred review, from 1-5.

If you don’t feel comfortable using your real email, you can use a fake one. When you don’t want to use your full name, you can just use your initials.

And the last important one is social media engagements. This means lots of people re-tweeting your website links, getting comments, and liking them. Focus on Reddit and Twitter.
Google spiders can have a hard time finding your posts on Linkedin and Facebook because it requires a log-in.

Don’t worry about behavioural, citations, or personalization in the chart above. Just focus on the top three for the greatest results.
