Working from home does come with challenges. One of the most significant challenges is the lack of social interaction and collaboration that comes from working in a traditional office setting.

While video conferencing and instant messaging tools can help bridge the gap, they cannot entirely replace face-to-face communication.

Another challenge is the difficulty in staying motivated and productive while working from home, especially when there is no clear separation between work and personal life. It is essential to create a designated workspace to help establish this separation and maintain focus on the work at hand.

While the shift to working from home has been a significant adjustment for the legal industry, it has created opportunities for lawyers to work more flexibly and efficiently.

Although there are challenges that come with working from home, many lawyers have found ways to overcome these obstacles and make the most of their newfound freedom.

This shift has allowed lawyers to create a workspace that is comfortable, efficient, and more conducive to their work style, ultimately leading to better results.

My story of working remotely

Many lawyers are working remotely these days. There seems to be a lot of media attention these days on lawyers working remotely.

Right now, I am writing this article from England. It seems that every article I write is from a different country. Many of my friends are jealous of the fact that I can work from anywhere.

They love the idea of a remote lifestyle while they work from an office from 9 to 5 pm and get stuck in traffic five days a week.

When I created a law firm, I wanted to distance myself from old-school lawyers.

There’s always a joke that friends and family make about “Where are you today?” As the CEO of a law firm, I work remotely 100% of the time.

All the lawyers who work for our law firm also work remotely. One of our lawyers is in Italy right now eating pasta during the day and exploring museums. At night, he works on marriage agreements for his clients.

How Can Lawyers Work From Home?

At the annual Clio conference, there is often a lot of talk about lawyers working remotely. While remote working is an important part of our law firm, we have other key points as well. Our law firm is digital, dynamic, and flexible.

Digital means: Harnessing all our online tools to engage with the firm and our clients, while delivering exceptional client experiences

Dynamic means: Bringing a high level of ambition and engagement while creating amazing client results and experiences

Flexible means: Using our flexible work approach to provide clients with excellent results, while also achieving one’s desired work-life balance.

Working remotely has been fun for me, and I have been able to try various experiments. I slept in my office for a few weeks before our law firm went 100% remote. It was important to try different things and see what worked best for my firm, clients, and myself.

I wrote an article for Money Magazine about sleeping in my office. Half of the comments were very positive and half were very negative.

It’s very interesting to see how divided people were over me sleeping in my office for a few weeks. I didn’t think people would care when I wrote the article. I was very wrong!

The Pros of Collaborating Remotely

While the benefits for a contractor are obvious, remote working is great for companies as well. Companies that allow it can save massive money on rent and pass on the savings to their clients or customers.

Even if you are working 50 hours a week as a remote employee, you can still spend your extra time doing interesting things in foreign countries instead of just going home and watching Netflix.

Instead of watching a movie, I can go to Buckingham Palace.

Another massive pro to remote working is that I save a lot of time by not having to go someplace travelling to and from work. But just like anything in life, it’s not all easy.

The grass always seems greener on the other side. Is the remote lifestyle worth it? Most definitely! I consider myself an expert in remote working because I have been doing it since I left the military many years ago.

Lawyers Work From Home

When lawyers work remotely, they still have to hit their financial targets and their client satisfaction survey results targets.

While they might get to pick their work hours, they will still have to work on their client’s files and upload their hours to Clio. The lawyer will have to make sure their clients are happy with the service they receive.

Is it easy? Not at all. You work all the time. When you are travelling, you can work from the pool or beach. But keep in mind, if you have a conference call, you need quiet.

If you are working from somewhere hot like Mexico, you can fry your computer. Just because you want to work in the heat, doesn’t mean your computer wants to.

Sometimes I have people come and join me in nice places like Florida. While I am on a normal “workday” the others are on vacation.

This causes stress for me, they want to go to Disney Land, and I have a large project I need to finish. In unique situations like this, remote working can make the work-life balance harder to manage.

Lawyers can work from home, you can do it.

Running a Law Firm Can Be Lonely

Since my law firm is remote, there are times when I miss going into an office. I miss talking to people in the same industry and just hearing about what they are working on.

Having social relationships is important, you can find a way to do it while remote working, but it’s hard. I have many acquaintances, but not a lot of close friends.

For example, in a few days, there is one of my best friend’s baby shower. I can’t make it because I am on the other side of the continent. While he understands, it doesn’t foster close relationships.

I get jealous of weird things, like seeing a group of employees at Starbucks laughing together. They seem to be close and to know each other well. I don’t have that kind of in-person connection with anyone at my law firm, because I rarely see anyone that works for me.

Laziness with remote working

Remote work is not for everyone. Work is work; you must get it done. If you can’t be strict with yourself, like waking up at the same time every day, then remote working isn’t for you.

Just like with anything in life, you can go down the wrong path, and that path is laziness with remote working. I have seen lawyers sleep in until lunchtime. It’s only a matter of time until they get a law society complaint, get fired, or both.

I don’t have the kind of freedom where I can do whatever I want, I still must manage my law firm. The clients of our law firm don’t care where I am travelling, they want to get a resolution to their legal issues.

It’s also extremely exciting when a client leaves a good review, and I know we have helped someone with their complicated legal issues.

Partly because of our law firm, their life is now better than it was when they first reached out to us. That’s exciting!

Attorney technology competence is required these days. Law firms’ changing views are starting to change the legal industry. ​The legal industry has always been slow to innovate. Attorneys, perhaps too calculated and cautious for their good at times, are often hesitant to hop on or be a part of anything that seems unfamiliar.

Changing views toward technology

They avoid doing anything potentially risky. As a result, lawyers have generally been late adopters when it comes to new technology. Lawyers’ changing views toward technology will improve the legal industry as a whole.

While lawyers may carry reputations for being stubborn and stuck in their ways, consumers can be encouraged by the significant change that has taken place in a few law firms over the past few years.

According to data shared by Blueprint, an estimated 16% of law partners will retire in the next five years. An additional 38% are expected to retire in the next decade.

The same site reports that jobs for recent law school graduates are slowly on the rise. What this means is that new young blood is starting to take over the legal workforce.

A generation of lawyers attached to their old-school ways of serving clients is gradually being aided and/or replaced by Millennials and Generation Z lawyers with a stronger affinity for using technology.

Even many lawyers in between their early and final practicing years are starting to realize that their firms must start embracing new technology or quickly fall behind new youthful competitors.

Simply put, an increased emphasis on technology should result in firms being able to better serve their clients, and provide them with a more enjoyable customer experience. Also, efficiency in law firms may put downward pressure on pricing.

How attorney technology competence helps

3- Firms working more efficiently, leading to savings

Some legal practices are already successfully incorporating new technology into their firm. This provides clients with a superior experience as a result.

Other firms are still playing catch up, but the recent trends of lawyers embracing technology are still largely positive. So how exactly are legal professionals using new technology to improve their practices?

Attorney technology competence

Family law cases typically involve a ton of paperwork. If law offices have a high number of cases, particularly larger cases that span over a long period of years, that can mean boxes and boxes of paperwork.

This is less than ideal for a law office, as having to go through large piles of papers can slow down a lawyer’s ability to get work done.

There’s also, of course, the risk of important files being lost or misplaced, which is simply unacceptable when it comes to life-altering legal matters. This is why our law firm went paperless with everything in Microsoft’s secure cloud. We are no longer a law firm but are now a tech company in China.

Lawyers will gradually start to become more computer savvy. There is a trend of lawyers’ changing views toward technology.

Paperwork in a digital format

They have shifted towards creating their paperwork in a digital format. They store that paperwork on a cloud-based paperless office system. Doing so allows important files to be located in a matter of seconds. This guarantees that nothing relating to a client is ever lost.

Documents can now be instantly transferred through cloud-based systems between lawyers and their co-workers. This system also works between lawyers and their clients. This makes staying organized easier and sharing information simple.

Lawyers Have The Ability To Work Remotely

Clients would love it if lawyers could be in their offices all the time to answer client questions and work on cases. However, work circumstances and life circumstances always seem to get in the way. Attorneys will have days and sometimes weeks, where they need to be away from the office to represent a client.

They might also go on vacation to de-stress. Lawyers are also human beings, and things like injuries, illnesses, and pregnancies can result in them needing to take extended time away from the office and work from home.

There was a lawyer who worked part-time while travelling in Europe and Peru!

In the past, lawyers have struggled to serve clients while out of the office. New technologies like smartphones, video conferencing, virtual networks, and have changed the legal industry. Law office employees can do a good percentage of their job from just about anywhere.

The ability to speak with or get a message or document to a client from outside the office means lawyers never have to make one client a priority over another.

Remote technology allows law offices to always be running at their best. Clients always get the attention they require (within 24 hours during workdays.)

Lawyer Technology Competence

Growing in popularity is legal practice management software. There was a 2017 study conducted by the company Answering Legal on this topic.

They found that two-thirds of our attorney customers were using at least one legal software. The main goal of these programs is to streamline a practice’s workflow. This helps them work more efficiently in some areas of the job.

Legal software, of course, varies in what it can do. Today, there are many examples of lawyers utilizing software to better manage cases. They use this to schedule appointments, process payments, and improve their marketing campaigns.

The result is usually lawyers spend a lot less time performing administrative tasks. This leaves them more time to focus on the client and win their case. Legal software can also help keep firm errors to a minimum and decrease aggravation in lawyer-client interactions.

Lawyers Work From Home

The old ways of getting work done don’t need to be completely abandoned. But new technology should always be embraced or at least looked into. At a few legal answering services, they have never been intimidated by new technology entering the attorney industry.

Rather, they have encouraged their lawyer customers to take advantage of it. Lawyers being able to better serve clients usually means more successful cases and more potential leads calling into their firm. Everybody wins!

Technology has the legal industry changing fast. We expect future innovation to bring nothing but good things for legal consumers.

Lawyers will have to adapt in a hurry or consider other employment. Attorney technology competence is very important, and law firms must take it seriously.
