Eugene Creighton

Eugene Creighton, also known as Aakaota’si (Owns Many Horses), boasts a rich and multifaceted background as a member of the Kainai/Blood Tribe, within the Blackfoot Confederacy. His life journey reflects a deep commitment to his community and a passion for rodeo.

Eugene's involvement in rodeo dates back to the founding of the Blood Reserve Rodeo Club in 1978, aimed at nurturing the rodeo talents and social skills of youth on the Blood Tribe Reserve. Over the years, he has clinched regional titles in steer wrestling and team roping, earning qualifications for the prestigious Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, NV. His remarkable contributions to the sport culminated in his induction into the INFR Hall of Fame in 2019.

Beyond the arena, Eugene's illustrious legal career spans decades of service and leadership. Beginning as one of Alberta's first indigenous officers in the Native Justice & Correction Initiatives in 1970, he later transitioned to roles within Alberta Correctional Services. Eugene's journey eventually led him to pursue law at the University of Alberta, where he honed his legal acumen.

Upon joining Walsh LLP (formerly Walsh Wilkins LLP), Eugene's expertise in First Nations Law and his sterling reputation as a legal luminary made him an invaluable asset. His pivotal role in the firm's growth was duly recognized with his appointment as partner in 1999 and the subsequent renaming of the firm to Walsh Wilkins Creighton LLP in 2002.

Eugene's impact transcends the legal realm. He has been a driving force in advancing the Blood Tribe community, spearheading initiatives such as the Tribal Justice system, the establishment of the Blood Tribe Police force, and the expansion of essential services like healthcare and education on the reserve.

Even in retirement from the bench, Eugene continues to inspire and guide young lawyers at Walsh LLP, offering invaluable insights and mentorship in Indigenous law and advocacy.
