Fiona Balaton

Before diving into the legal world, Fiona dedicated her career to nursing, gaining rich experience across various countries including Scotland, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. Her primary role was in the post-anesthesia care unit, where she honed her skills and knowledge in patient care. Transitioning from healthcare to law, Fiona joined Carbert Waite LLP as an Associate, where she now channels her extensive healthcare background into her legal practice.

Her expertise in health law is evident as she advises health professionals on regulatory matters and defends them in medical malpractice cases. Currently, Fiona is enriching her legal acumen by pursuing a Master of Laws in Health Law, with a particular focus on vaccination policy in Canada.

Fiona's commitment to the legal community extends beyond her professional work. She is deeply involved with the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law, where she offers mentorship to law students. Additionally, her contributions as a teaching assistant in Conflicts of Laws and Employment Law further showcase her dedication to education. Fiona also plays a pivotal role in the university's mooting program, helping to organize prominent competitions such as the William McGillivray Moot Shield Competition and the Bennett Jones Cup in Health Law Advocacy.

Her scholarly contributions include her work on "Funding Environmental Projects with Regulatory Prosecutions: Transparency and Accountability in Creative Environmental Sentencing," reflecting her broad interests and expertise in both health and environmental law.

Fiona's educational background is as diverse as her career, with a Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing from Robert Gordon University, Scotland, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary, obtained in 2018. Her professional affiliations are extensive, including memberships in the Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association, Calgary Bar Association, Association of Women Lawyers, and a non-practicing membership in the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta.
