Matt specializes in navigating the complex landscape of energy regulation, environmental law, and Indigenous law matters. He represents a diverse clientele, including entities from the oil and gas, pipeline, mining, and various sectors of the electrical power industry, such as thermal, solar, and wind energy companies. His expertise extends to securing regulatory approvals for significant projects, handling regulatory aspects of commercial deals, ensuring compliance, participating in regulatory system design, and managing land rights and compensation issues.

With a knack for meticulously drafting regulatory applications and motions, Matt adeptly prepares written evidence and arguments for regulatory proceedings. His role involves delivering strategic regulatory and environmental law advice to bolster business decisions and transactions, alongside conducting in-depth research on pertinent regulatory and environmental law issues.

Before his tenure at Blakes, Matt gained invaluable insights and experience serving as a judicial law clerk for the Court of Appeal of Alberta, enriching his understanding of the legal system.

Matt's portfolio of work includes assisting BluEarth Renewables Inc. with regulatory amendments for the Hand Hills wind project and representing a pipeline company in land rights acquisition proceedings. His involvement in regulatory applications for electrical distribution lines and tolls and tariffs proceedings underscores his comprehensive regulatory expertise across various energy sectors.

In addition to his practice, Matt contributes to the legal community through his publications, including co-authoring a bulletin on Alberta's geothermal regulatory framework, showcasing his commitment to advancing legal knowledge in energy regulation.

A member of the Law Society of Alberta, Matt's academic achievements include earning his JD from the University of Calgary, where he was recognized on the Dean's List, and his BA with distinction from the University of Victoria. Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2020, Matt's career is marked by a dedication to excellence in energy and environmental law.
