Peter Ciechanowski's journey into law is a story of diverse academic achievements and professional experiences that contribute to his expertise, particularly in the energy sector. His educational background is rooted deeply in the University of Alberta, where he not only secured a Juris Doctor in 2016 but also honed his skills and knowledge in public health, immunology, infection, and peace studies. His academic endeavors provided him a broad platform, culminating in his admission to the bar in 2017.

Peter's career prior to joining BD&P includes a significant stint at a national law firm in Calgary. There, his advisory role spanned regulatory and environmental implications within the energy sector, mergers, acquisitions, corporate disclosures, and appearances before key administrative tribunals like the Alberta Utilities Commission and the Canada Energy Regulator. This position allowed Peter to delve into complex energy matters, showcasing his ability to navigate intricate legal landscapes.

Before his time at the national law firm, Peter offered his expertise as legal counsel to the Government of Alberta. His responsibilities included advising on energy, trade matters, petroleum, natural gas tenure and royalty, procurement, project development, and more. He contributed to high-profile projects such as the Quest Carbon Capture and Storage Project and the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, illustrating his pivotal role in energy and environmental law.

Peter's commitment to public health and the environment predates his legal career, evidenced by his work with Alberta Health Services, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, and an international biotechnology company. These experiences underscore his comprehensive understanding of public health and its intersections with legal practice.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Peter is deeply involved in the community, serving as the Corporate Secretary for Caregivers Alberta and as an Advisor for DiscoveryLab. His dedication to service and innovation was recognized with the Premier’s Public Service Team Award in 2020, highlighting his contributions to curtailment and crude by rail initiatives that addressed oil differential pricing challenges.

Peter's recent move to BD&P's energy law group on December 13, 2023, marks a significant addition to the firm, promising to leverage his vast experience in regulatory, environmental, and Indigenous law, among other areas. His journey reflects a commitment to public service, environmental stewardship, and legal excellence in the ever-evolving energy sector.
