Having previously served as General Counsel of Bennett Jones from 2008 to 2022, Steve brings a wealth of experience to the table. His legal journey took him to the University of California, Berkeley School of Law as a Fulbright Scholar in 2007-2008. During this time, Steve's research delved into Canada's regulatory response to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, showcasing his commitment to understanding and shaping the legal landscape.
Returning to Bennett Jones in 2006 after a decade in both the private and public sectors, Steve held significant positions such as senior vice-president and general counsel of Canadian Airlines Corporation from 1996 to 2000. Subsequently, he served as chair and CEO of the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) from 2000 to 2005.
Notably, during his tenure as chair of the ASC, Steve also chaired the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), representing the provincial and territorial securities regulators in Canada. Additionally, he served on the Council of Governors of the Canadian Public Accountability Board, overseeing audits of Canadian public issuers.
Steve's accolades speak volumes about his contributions to the legal profession. Appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000, he was honored with an Outstanding Service Award from the North American Securities Administrators Association in 2005, recognizing his dedication to investor protection in Alberta and beyond.
In 2006, Steve obtained his ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors (Canada), further solidifying his expertise in corporate governance. He continues to impact the legal community as a member of the UC Berkeley Law School International Advisory Council.
Outside his legal endeavors, Steve has also made significant contributions, serving as a former director of the Canadian Winter Sport Institute (WinSport Canada). Additionally, he shared his knowledge as a former Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Calgary, teaching courses in securities law and corporate governance for a decade.
