James Dunphy

James, also known as Jim, joined our firm in 1992, starting as an articling student. Transitioning to an associate in 1993, he later became a partner until 2012. In 2018, Jim returned to WBA Law LLP, now specializing in tax matters.

Before his legal career, James served as a Chartered Professional Accountant, holding a senior manager role at the Canada Revenue Agency for twelve years. His extensive background uniquely positions him as a tax specialist, offering innovative solutions across various corporate and commercial sectors.

With a focus on tax-effective transactions, James excels in mergers, acquisitions, and corporate reorganizations, particularly in property settlements during relationship breakdowns. He's recognized in the tax community for his problem-solving abilities and adeptness in navigating complex financial structures, including those in farming operations.

In addition to his solicitor practice, James is an experienced litigator, representing clients in various courts, including the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. His courtroom presence extends to Alberta's Court of Appeal, Court of Queen’s Bench, and Provincial Court.

Born in Québec, James maintains strong ties to Montréal, where he holds season tickets for the Montréal Canadiens. Outside of work, he enjoys indulging in good food and spending time with friends and family.
