Growing up in Calgary, Garrett has always felt a strong connection to his Métis heritage, tracing back to his grandfather from Fort Simpson, NWT. Despite losing touch with his roots after his grandfather's passing, Garrett sees every opportunity to rekindle his cultural ties through active involvement in student and community organizations.
His academic journey began at Mount Royal University, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Policy Studies, complemented by minors in Economics and Political Science, between 2012 and 2016. During this time, his outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Winston Churchill Society’s Moot Court Scholarship, an achievement that fueled his passion for law and justice.
Transitioning to the University of Calgary, Garrett earned his Juris Doctor in June 2020, marking the culmination of his academic pursuit in law. Before joining Maurice Law's Calgary Office as a student in 2019, Garrett gained invaluable experience as a summer student in the Legal Services Unit of the National Energy Board. Here, he collaborated closely with internal counsel to provide legal advice on projects affecting the rights of indigenous communities across Canada.
His commitment to serving indigenous peoples extends beyond his professional endeavors. As an active member of the Canadian Bar Association's Alberta Branch Aboriginal Law - South Section, Garrett plays a pivotal role in shaping legal discourse and advocating for indigenous rights.
Furthermore, Garrett's engagement in various community initiatives underscores his dedication to fostering positive change. From co-chairing the Policy Studies Alumni Chapter at Mount Royal University to serving as the Events Coordinator for the Indigenous Law Club at the University of Calgary, he actively contributes to initiatives aimed at empowering indigenous communities.
In his ongoing journey, Garrett remains steadfast in his mission to champion justice for indigenous peoples and empower them to shape their own futures.
