More Information:

Steve's journey with Maurice Law began as an Articling Student in the summer of 2010. After being called to the Bar of the Law Society of Alberta in September 2011, he seamlessly transitioned into a Partner role within the firm in 2016.

At the core of Steve's practice lies a deep commitment to safeguarding and promoting aboriginal and treaty rights, along with resolving claims against the government of Canada. Since joining Maurice Law, Steve has delved into various legal arenas, including corporate and commercial law. However, his primary focus remains on resolving specific claims through negotiation or litigation, navigating venues such as the Specific Claims Tribunal, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal.

Teaming up with Ron Maurice, Steve recently secured a groundbreaking victory for the Beardy’s & Okemasis First Nation before the Specific Claims Tribunal. This pivotal case, regarded as a "test case" on behalf of 17 First Nations, resulted in a landmark decision in favor of the Beardy’s & Okemasis First Nation. The tribunal awarded equitable compensation of $4.5 million, setting a precedent for other similar claims.

Before joining Maurice Law, Steve earned his LL.B/J.D. from the University of Alberta. During his academic tenure, he focused his studies on First Nation legal issues and contributed significantly as a research student on projects concerning Métis land rights.

As a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan and the Law Society of Alberta, Steve brings a wealth of legal expertise to the table. His practice areas span specific claims, constitutional litigation, trusts, and administrative law, reflecting his dedication to advocating for justice and equity within Indigenous communities.
