Lisa Abbott, a distinguished Cree lawyer, bears the Indian name "Thunderbird Woman Who Travels Through Land," a title reflecting her deep-rooted connection to her heritage. Originating from the Treaty Six Territory, Lisa is an esteemed member of the Pelican Lake First Nation. Her role as a mother to two remarkable indigenous daughters is a source of immense pride and joy in her life.

Currently residing in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Lisa considers herself fortunate to live and work in the traditional and unceded territories of various First Nations, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and others. This region, rich in indigenous culture and history, has deepened her appreciation for the land and its original inhabitants.

Lisa's educational journey led her to the University of Saskatchewan, where she obtained her LL.B. in 2005. Demonstrating a profound commitment to her field, she was admitted to the Bars of Ontario and Saskatchewan in 2010. Her career trajectory is marked by significant roles at the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC), the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN). In 2010, Lisa embarked on a new venture, establishing her own law practice.

With over ten years of legal experience, Lisa has dedicated her career to championing access to justice and addressing the enduring effects of colonization and assimilation on indigenous communities. Her expertise in culturally relevant, trauma-informed lawyering has been instrumental in aiding hundreds of former students with their Indian Residential and Federal Indian Day School claims. Additionally, she has represented numerous clients in Criminal and Family/Child Protection legal matters, advocating for them across various court levels, including Provincial Court, Queens Bench, and Federal Court.

Lisa's legal acumen and dedicated advocacy align perfectly with the objectives of the BC First Nation Justice Strategy. Her appointment as a Staff Lawyer with the Virtual Indigenous Justice Centers underscores her commitment to driving transformative change in the justice system.

Away from her professional duties, Lisa indulges in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoys exploring local farmers' markets, creating culinary delights for her adult daughters, and hiking the expansive trails around the lower mainland Vancouver with her faithful dog, Chewie. These activities not only provide her with a sense of balance but also deepen her connection to the community and the natural beauty of British Columbia.
