David Fung

Starting his journey in 2017 as a summer intern, David quickly climbed the ranks at Whitelaw Twining, transitioning from an articled student to an associate by 2019. His legal expertise spans a broad spectrum, focusing primarily on disputes within the realms of shipping, transportation, marine insurance, and property damage outside of the marine sector. David has notably represented a diverse clientele, including freight forwarders, vessel operators, and insurers, tackling complex issues ranging from allisions and salvage to trade disputes and cargo contamination.

David's role extends beyond marine issues. He is adept at handling subrogation cases for insurance clients, working tirelessly across a spectrum of insured parties. His approach is strategic and client-focused, aiming for resolutions that mitigate financial risks while maximizing recovery. His success in resolving cases related to fires, floods, and product liability is testament to his comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape and client needs.

His courtroom experience is vast, with a portfolio that includes representing clients in British Columbia's Provincial and Supreme Courts, the Federal Court, and even on international arbitration platforms. David's ability to adapt his strategies to suit the scale and needs of his clients has made him a respected advocate in the legal community.

Beyond his legal practice, David actively contributes to the legal community's growth and diversity. He holds leadership positions within the Firm’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, the Canadian Bar Association's Maritime Law Subsection, and the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (BC). His background in business development within the tech sector has enriched his approach to law, bringing a unique perspective to his practice.

David's life outside the courtroom is equally vibrant. An explorer of new dining and travel destinations, he also keeps up with tennis and soccer fervently. Family time, especially with his wife and twin boys, is a priority, reshaping his views on life's simpler pleasures, including sleep.

With an academic background that includes a J.D. from the University of Victoria and an Honours B.A. in Political Science from the University of Toronto, David's professional affiliations are extensive. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 2019 and is a member of several prestigious legal organizations. His contributions to legal discourse, through articles and publications, reflect his deep engagement with his areas of expertise, including notable discussions on maritime liability and insurance law.
