Nigel Beckmann

Since joining the team in 2000, Nigel has become an integral part of our legal family. His area of focus lies in the realm of general insurance litigation, with a special emphasis on defending personal injury claims. Not only does he spearhead the Defamation and Abuse Litigation divisions, but he also brings a unique blend of creativity and meticulous planning to tackle cases that span occupier’s liability, nuisance, and defamation.

Nigel’s courtroom prowess is evident from his extensive track record, having represented clients in both the Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia on numerous occasions. His approach to success hinges on thorough preparation and strategic foresight.

Beyond the courtroom, Nigel is dedicated to sharing his knowledge with clients, colleagues, and various professional groups. His commitment to education has led him to conduct informative sessions for the CBA, CDL, and other organizations, covering a range of topics from the Health Care Cost Recovery Act to ethics in insurance litigation. Additionally, Nigel lends his expertise to those in need through Pro Bono Clinics run by Access Justice, offering free legal advice.

Before embarking on his legal career, Nigel’s journey took him to Japan for four years, where he contributed to the BC Council of Forest Industries. When not working, he cherishes time spent with his sons, and he eagerly pursues hobbies like fishing, skiing, and motorcycling.

Nigel’s academic credentials include an LL.B. from the University of British Columbia (1999), a Diploma in Asia Pacific Business Management from Capilano College (1991), and a B.A. from Queen’s University (1987).

Professionally, Nigel has been recognized by his peers, evident in his admission to the Bars of British Columbia (2000), Alberta (2019), and Yukon (2014). He has served as the past chair for both the Products Liability and Insurance Law Sections of the Canadian Bar Association in BC, and he is a member of the CBA Class Action Section. His contributions to the legal community extend to his role as a Legal Clinician for the Western Canada Society to Access Justice.

His excellence in the field of law has not gone unnoticed, with his name appearing in the Best Lawyers in Canada list from 2022 to 2024 for both Insurance Law and Personal Injury Law.

Nigel has also contributed significantly to legal literature, with publications such as the investigation of trucking accidents and notable cases like Coburn v. Family Insurance Solutions, 2014 BCCA 73, marking his expertise and contributions to the legal field.
