Rachel, an esteemed legal professional, embarked on her academic journey at the School of Journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University, where she earned a Bachelor of Journalism with Honours. Furthering her education, she pursued and attained a Juris Doctor degree from the prestigious University of British Columbia.
Initiating her legal career in 2014, Rachel's path was marked by significant milestones, including a comprehensive articling period at a renowned national law firm based in Vancouver, and a distinguished clerkship at the Alberta Court of Appeal. Her legal expertise, primarily in criminal justice law and policy, is deeply rooted in addressing issues of wrongful convictions. Additionally, Rachel's legal acumen extends to research and analytical work in diverse spheres of civil and commercial law. Her exceptional contributions to the legal field were acknowledged when she was named among Canada’s 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine.
Rachel's passion for justice and reform was profoundly influenced by her involvement in the landmark case of R. v. Tallio. This case, concerning Phillip Tallio, an Indigenous man wrongfully convicted of second-degree murder in 1983 in Bella Coola, B.C., underscored the systemic challenges within both federal and provincial justice and correctional systems, particularly the disproportionate representation of Indigenous people. This experience has been a driving force in her advocacy for systemic change.
Acknowledging the significance of the land she resides and works on, Rachel expresses deep gratitude for being part of the unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and the Syilx Nation (Westbank First Nation).
Outside her professional realm, Rachel finds joy and balance in life through her creative pursuits and personal interests. She is an avid oil painter, a lover of travel alongside her partner, and a connoisseur of sushi and chocolate. Moreover, she cherishes quality time with her loved ones, including her human and canine companions, nurturing a rich and fulfilling personal life.
