Matthew Scott

Since joining JSS Barristers in 2021, Matthew Scott quickly became a notable figure in the legal community, particularly after finishing his articles with the same firm. His legal acumen spans a broad spectrum, including but not limited to administrative, public and regulatory law, appeals, and arbitration. Matthew's knack for navigating complex legal terrains shines in charter of rights and constitutional law, construction law, and corporate and commercial litigation. His proficiency extends into specialized areas like injunctions, oil & gas litigation, privacy litigation, as well as securities and shareholder litigation.

Matthew's role in arbitral proceedings is especially commendable. He has been part of teams that tackle high-stakes arbitrations and has played pivotal roles in multi-party contractual disputes. His expertise in shareholder disputes and oppression claims, particularly in representing minority shareholders and advising on corporate governance, is noteworthy.

Matthew's educational background is as distinguished as his professional one. He graduated with great distinction from the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 2020. A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Matthew's academic journey began at the University of Regina, majoring in political science and minoring in French and francophone intercultural studies. His studies included a year at l’Institut d’études politiques (Sciences Po) in Rennes, France, showcasing his bilingual proficiency in French and English.

His commitment to the community is evident through his law school involvement, serving on the Saskatchewan Law Review's editorial board and as Vice-President of external affairs for the Law Students’ Association. His volunteer work with Campus Legal Services via Pro Bono Students Canada highlights his dedication to service. Matthew's academic excellence was recognized with the William Elliot Entrance Scholarship and the College of Law Upper-Year Juris Doctor Academic Achievement Scholarship, awarded twice.

Before embarking on his legal career, Matthew was a tennis coach, which perhaps laid the foundation for his strategic thinking and competitiveness. Outside the courtroom, he enjoys skiing, golf, photography, and both watching and playing soccer, showcasing a well-rounded personality.

Matthew's contribution to legal literature includes co-authoring "Protecting Privacy in the Era of AI" for the National Magazine of the Canadian Bar Association, marking his engagement with contemporary legal issues and his forward-thinking approach to privacy in the digital age.
