John's journey into the realm of law began amidst the scenic landscapes of North Vancouver, where his early education unfolded at Highlands, Balmoral, and Delbrook Schools. This foundation led him to pursue a law degree at the University of British Columbia, culminating in 1976. A year later, he embarked on his professional journey, earning his stripes at the British Columbia Bar.

His legal career initially took him to Prince Rupert and the bustling streets of downtown Vancouver. Yet, the pull of North Vancouver proved irresistible, drawing him back in 1981 to lay down his professional roots. By 1986, a partnership was forged with James Straith, marking the inception of Lakes Straith and Whyte LLP. John's legal acumen is particularly evident in his solicitor's work, where he passionately serves the people, specializing in Wills and Estates, small business law, and real estate.

Beyond his professional endeavors, John's life is deeply intertwined with the North Vancouver community, a place not just for career achievements but for life's milestones. Alongside his wife, Clare, he has nurtured a family, raising two daughters in Lynn Valley. His commitment to his community extends through active involvement in various organizations and initiatives. His contributions range from engaging with the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce to supporting the North Shore Neighbourhood House, West Coast Alternatives, the North Shore Disability Resource Centre, and Friends of the North Vancouver Museum. Moreover, his dedication to societal well-being is further highlighted by his fundraising efforts for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

John's passion for sharing knowledge has also led him to teach courses for the Continuing Legal Education Society and People’s Law School, enriching the community with his expertise. His life outside the courtroom is as vibrant, filled with activities such as swimming, cycling, skiing, hiking, and gardening, showcasing a well-rounded individual who cherishes both his professional and personal life.
