Jim Hanson

Embarking on an illustrious journey that began with his birth at Lions Gate Hospital in 1961, Jim Hanson's educational path led him from Windsor Secondary in North Vancouver to a diverse academic exploration at Simon Fraser University, UBC Law School, and finally, the esteemed Oxford University in England, where he attended Wadham College and obtained a BCL. In 1985, Jim's commitment to the legal profession was cemented when he was officially called to the bar of British Columbia, marking the beginning of what would be a dynamic and expansive 38-year legal career.

Throughout these years, Jim's professional endeavors have spanned a broad spectrum of legal challenges, including, but not limited to, personal injury, class actions, and both sexual and common assault cases. His expertise is particularly notable in handling complex cases involving serious brain injuries, paraplegia, quadriplegia, psychiatric issues, death claims, and other catastrophic injuries. One of Jim's most distinguished roles was serving as class counsel for the passengers of the British Columbia ferry Queen of the North, which solidified his reputation in the legal community.

Jim's prowess extends beyond the courtroom to civic engagement. In 2014, his dedication to serving his community was recognized when he was elected as a Councillor for the North Vancouver District, a role to which he was re-elected in 2018 and 2022. His contributions are manifold, including his work on the North Vancouver Policing Committee and his leadership as chair of the North Shore Standing Committee on Substance Use. Additionally, Jim plays a vital role on the Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Relations Committee.

Away from professional and civic duties, Jim cherishes his life in Blueridge with his wife, Ruth, and their adult children. The family shares a deep appreciation for the great outdoors, a passion that Jim exemplifies through his avid involvement in small boat sailing and salmon fishing. Moreover, Jim's commitment to physical fitness is evident in his frequent participation in the Grouse Grind and trail running in the Blueridge area, not to mention his proficiency in alpine skiing.
