Mark Horne

Since launching his legal career in Victoria back in 1979, Mark Horne K.C. has carved out a niche as a leading authority in the realms of Wills, Estates, Trusts, and Charities. With a robust team of six solicitors and an equal number of paralegals, he spearheads the Inheritance and Incapacity Planning Group at his firm. This commitment to excellence in estate planning and administration is a legacy that stretches back to 1958, starting with Ian Horne and later continued by Mark himself. They served the Government of British Columbia with unparalleled dedication, offering estate administration services.

Mark's journey took a significant turn when, after ten years in the field, he was honored with the inaugural Fellowship in Equity, Trusts & Fiduciary Relationships. This accolade led him back to the corridors of UVIC Law School, where he delved deeper into his specialty under the tutelage of Professor Donovan Waters. Beyond practicing law, Mark has made substantial contributions to legal education. He has been a fixture in the legal academic world, contributing to the Continuing Legal Education Society and the Professional Legal Training Programme, and imparting his knowledge of Succession at the University of Victoria Law School.

Recognition of Mark's expertise transcends borders. In 1992, the American College of Trusts and Estates Council named him a fellow, a testament to his profound knowledge and contributions to the field. Just two years later, the International Academy of Estates and Trust Law acknowledged him as an academician, a nod to his prowess in international estate planning. His leadership qualities have also been evident through his roles as a Past President of both the Victoria Estate Planning Council and the Victoria Wills and Trusts Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association. In a significant acknowledgment of his contributions to the legal profession, Mark was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2009, a title that transitioned to King’s Counsel in 2022.

Mark's influence extends beyond the courtroom. In March 2021, he was elected a Trustee of the British Columbia Government House Foundation, where he contributes his legal acumen towards preserving the Government House and its grounds. This role underscores his commitment to enhancing community assets and promoting cultural values across the province.

Mark's passion for supporting community initiatives shines through his active involvement with the arts and environmental sustainability.
