Brian Dybwad

Brian, who embarked on his legal career in 2010, has since honed his skills in several key areas: criminal defense, family law, child protection, and serving as Director’s Counsel for the Family Maintenance Enforcement Program. His role extends beyond the courtroom, as he is both a member and a Hereditary Chief of the Tsetsaut Gitxsan Nation, reflecting his deep-rooted commitment to his community and heritage.

With a fervent interest in promoting diversity, safeguarding lawyers' mental health, and driving forward the agenda of reconciliation and good governance, Brian's legal journey took a significant turn when he was elected a Bencher in 2022. In this capacity, he contributes as the Vice-Chair of the Practice Standards Committee and plays an integral role in the Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Committee.

Brian's career trajectory is marked by his unwavering dedication to the welfare of society's most vulnerable groups. His tenure as the Manager of Family Law Services for Legal Aid BC and his involvement as a Fellow with CanAge, a leading advocacy group for seniors in Canada, highlight his commitment to championing the rights and well-being of the elderly. Furthermore, his participation as a Member at Large for the British Columbia Law Institute underscores his broad expertise in the legal field.

His leadership skills were earlier demonstrated through his three-term presidency of the Campbell River Bar Association. Brian's expertise is also sought after in educational forums; he has presented on a variety of topics at Continuing Legal Education and Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario. Additionally, his dedication to community service is evident in his volunteer work with an Indigenous Courts committee and working group.

Outside the legal arena, Brian actively engages in his local community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Campbell River Athletic Association, contributing to the development of his local rugby club. His personal life is enriched by his love for music, both as a listener and a multi-instrumentalist, and the joy of spending quality time with his family.
