Meet Miah Phelan Sweeney – a solicitor freshly qualified in May 2024, currently making waves in the Commercial Transactions Advisory Group at A&L Goodbody. Miah’s got some serious academic chops, having graduated from University College Cork’s BCL (Clinical) program with First Class Honours, all while holding a Quercus Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship. Not just a bookworm, though – she’s also the vice-captain of Muckross First XI, who just clinched the Leinster Division One Championship for 2024. She’s been part of both provincial and international panels at underage, so yeah, sports are kind of her thing.
Miah’s not just about legal briefs and hockey sticks; she’s also got a passion for community and advocacy. She’s an active member of the OUTLaw Network and serves on the Irish Women Lawyers Association’s Climate Committee. Before diving into her current roles, she mentored students through the UCC Plus Homework Club and volunteered at the Free Legal Advice Centre. She’s all about giving back and lifting others up.
Recently, Miah co-organized a storytelling event with Seanchoíche at A&L Goodbody, which turned out to be a massive hit. The evening was full of heartfelt and hilarious stories that brought everyone closer together and highlighted the real heartbeat of the firm – its people. She’s convinced every workplace could use a bit of Seanchoíche magic to build that sense of community.
On a personal note, Miah is thrilled to have completed her training contract and is officially stepping into her new role at A&L Goodbody. She’s pumped to be working alongside some of the best, including Keavy Ryan, Berni Hosty, and Stephen Quinlivan.
Miah’s also been busy advocating for inclusivity. During Pride 2024, she teamed up with Hayes Solicitors through the OUTLaw Network to deliver a workshop on being an effective ally in the workplace. They covered everything from fostering a culture of belonging, understanding key terminology, to owning and learning from mistakes. She’s grateful for A&L Goodbody’s support in her role with OUTLaw, and she’s always looking for ways to push for positive change.
So, if you’re interested in law, sports, advocacy, or just want to connect with someone passionate about making a difference, Miah’s definitely someone to keep on your radar.
