Hailing from the Malagawatch First Nation with ties to the Eskasoni First Nation, Tuma Young breaks barriers and molds as he strides through Nova Scotia's legal and academic landscapes. With the unique distinction of being the province's first Mi’kmaq-speaking attorney, Young's journey to the bar in 2001 marked a significant milestone not just for himself but for the broader L’nu community. His marriage to Nicolaas Honig and life in Sydney River serve as the backdrop to his impactful career, where he passionately imparts knowledge of Mi’kmaq Studies at Cape Breton University.

Beyond the courtroom and classroom, Young dedicates his intellect and energy to the exploration of Mi’kmaq legal principles, traditional medicines, and the rights and recognition of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals within Indigenous cultures. His presidency at the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society for the 2021-22 term underscores his leadership and commitment to advancing legal practice in Nova Scotia.

A co-founder of the Wabanaki Two Spirit Alliance in 2011 alongside John Sylliboy, Young's efforts to foster inclusive and celebratory spaces for 2-Spirited people within L’nuk communities underscore his dedication to social justice and cultural preservation. By running his private legal practice and serving on the executive of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, Young continues to pave the way for future generations, embodying the spirit of resilience and advocacy for the Mi’kmaq people.
