More Information:

Embarking on her legal career in 1986, Kay has honed her expertise in family law and divorce, serving clients across Nova Scotia with a special affinity for the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, and Truro. Born and raised on the South Shore, she finds a unique connection in these regions. Kay's early career included a stint as a legal secretary for seven years, after which she pursued legal studies at Dalhousie Law School. Her admission to the Nova Scotia Bar marked the beginning of a diverse legal journey, encompassing roles in both small and large law firms in Halifax, with a practice that initially covered real estate, estates, family law, and civil litigation. 1995 saw her as a co-founder of Reierson Sealy, and she later established herself as a sole practitioner for 16 years before joining MDW Law in 2014.

Kay’s practice from 2000 to 2016 was exclusively dedicated to family law, aiding both married and unmarried couples in navigating complex issues such as parenting, support, and intricate divisions involving matrimonial assets, businesses, and pensions. Her legal prowess is well-recognized in her frequent appearances before the Family, Supreme, and Appeal Courts of Nova Scotia, where she has demonstrated both thoroughness and assertiveness.

Understanding the unique needs of her clients, Kay provides prompt and clear guidance, tailored to their individual situations. She advocates for creative settlements that steer clear of courtrooms, thus reducing emotional and financial strain. Her commitment to this approach is evidenced by her educational endeavors: a Level One Negotiation Certificate from Harvard Law School, Nova Scotia Collaborative Law certification, and extensive training in arbitration, mental health law, elder law, and negotiation skills, obtained both locally and in the United States.

Kay's influence extends beyond her law practice. She has contributed to the legal community as a law lecturer at Mount St. Vincent University, a writer and presenter of various legal papers, and an elected member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. Her commitment to community service is further demonstrated through her roles on the Nova Scotia Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act Review Board, as a Canadian Bar Association representative on the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee, a decade-long voluntary legal counsel for the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Nova Scotia Branch, and her seven-year tenure on the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society Family Law Standards Committee.

Since relocating to the Annapolis Valley in 2019, she has become an active member of the Kings County Barristers’ Society and the Valley Women’s Business Network. Away from her professional endeavors, Kay enjoys spending time with her two energetic grandchildren and a spirited Yorkie, indulging in her passions for music, Scrabble, gardening, and golf, despite self-admittedly lacking skill in the latter but compensating with fervor.
