Sonja Barnes

Since 2019, Sonja has been a vital part of the Mills & Mills LLP team, bringing her expertise as a LegalShield Associate to the forefront. Her journey into law began long before this role, with a diverse practice spanning personal injury, family, business, and employment law. Sonja's career is marked by a passion for aiding individuals navigate the complexities of legal challenges. Her role at LegalShield amplifies this passion, enabling her to offer prompt and effective assistance.

What sets Sonja apart is her ability to demystify legal processes for members, guiding them with clarity and empathy. She takes pride in seeing members grow more confident and less daunted by their legal predicaments. Before her tenure at Mills & Mills LLP, Sonja operated her own family law practice, gaining significant experience in child protection matters, advising on the intricacies of dealing with the Children’s Aid Society.

Her foundation in personal injury law was laid during her articling days, complemented by her experience in employment law from the perspectives of both employers and employees. Moreover, her knowledge in corporate law, especially trademarks, contracts, and compliance, is extensive, thanks to her progression from legal assistant to law clerk, and finally to trademark agent before law school.

Sonja’s journey through various legal roles has equipped her with a broad understanding of the challenges people face, enabling her to steer them towards effective solutions. Her proficiency in French enhances her ability to connect with francophone members, offering them services in their native language, albeit not at a translator's proficiency.

Admitted to the bar in 2005 after graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School, Sonja is a proud member of the Law Society of Ontario. Her commitment to community service is evident through her volunteer work with the Rotary Club of Bracebridge and her past involvement with the Hamilton Folk Arts Heritage Council, showcasing her dedication not just to the legal profession but to her community as well.
