Albert Engel

Albert holds the title of Specialist in Environmental Law, a certification granted by the Law Society of Ontario. His advisory role encompasses both environmental and renewable energy law matters, providing clients with both legal counsel and strategic guidance.

With a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University, Albert's expertise is built on a solid foundation. Before joining Foglers in 2010, he spent a decade with the Legal Services Branch of Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), equipping him with valuable insights into governmental environmental policies and procedures.

Albert's practice is diverse, extending from assisting with renewable energy projects to navigating the intricacies of environmental approvals and hearings. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Ontario's inaugural renewable energy approval hearing, showcasing his depth of experience in this field.

His expertise also covers the environmental facets of transactions, due diligence processes, obtaining regulatory approvals, and defending against environmental prosecutions. Albert adeptly handles appeals, civil litigation concerning environmental matters, and the redevelopment of contaminated lands and brownfields. He represents clients across various forums, including Ontario’s Environmental Review Tribunal, the Ontario Energy Board, and courts at all levels.

Albert extends his legal prowess to defending against violations of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, guiding clients through Ministry of Labour investigations and prosecutions. His contributions to environmental law have earned him recognition among his peers and a listing in The Best Lawyers™ in Canada, as well as being a repeatedly recommended lawyer in the Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory.

His educational journey began with an Honours Bachelor of Science, followed by an M.E.S./LL.B, both from York University. Albert’s involvement in the legal community is extensive, having chaired the Ontario Bar Association's Environmental Law Section Executive and being an active member of several environmental and legal associations.

Albert’s thought leadership is evident through his speaking engagements at major conferences and seminars, where he addresses contemporary issues in environmental litigation, project development, and the impact of climate change on urban planning and sustainability.
