During the opening arguments of his sexual assault trial, allegations were made against Peter Nygard, a former Canadian fashion executive. Prosecutors accused Nygard of using his wealth and influence to attract young women and girls to his Toronto office, where he allegedly sexually assaulted them. This office, located at 1 Niagara St., was prominently marked with the Nygard name and served as the headquarters of his fashion business.
The trial involves five women, whose identities are protected under a publication ban, each alleging that Nygard lured them to his office under various pretenses, such as offering tours or job interviews. These encounters reportedly culminated in a bedroom suite within the office, where the alleged assaults occurred. The suite was described by assistant Crown attorney Ana Serban as a lavish space with a large bed, a stone jacuzzi, a bar, and specially designed doors that lacked handles and were controlled by automatic, keypad-operated locks.
Nygard faces charges including five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement, with the alleged incidents spanning from the 1980s to the mid-2000s. He has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
