Jaan Lilles

Jaan Lilles holds a pivotal role at Lenczner Slaght, not only as a partner but also leading the firm’s Professional Liability practice group. His legal expertise is extensive, covering professional liability, medical malpractice, commercial disputes, employment, and administrative law. Jaan has made his mark in the courtroom across all judicial levels in Ontario, including significant roles as lead counsel in notable courts such as the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada.

His involvement extends beyond the courtroom to administrative tribunals, where he adeptly handles both prosecution and defense in professional discipline matters across various health colleges and the Law Society Tribunal. His participation in judicial reviews and appeals from administrative decisions is frequent and notable.

Driven by a profound interest in privacy law, Jaan advanced his education with a Master's of Law from the University of Toronto, focusing his thesis on "The Common Law Right to Privacy." As a thought leader, he often shares his insights at legal education events and has imparted knowledge as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law, Western University for three years.

Jaan’s contributions to law have not gone unnoticed, earning him recognition from esteemed legal directories such as Lexpert, Best Lawyers, and Benchmark Canada for his outstanding legal acumen.

His practice areas include appeals, commercial litigation, employment, professional liability and regulation, and public law. Admitted to the Ontario Bar in 2004, Jaan’s academic credentials are impressive, holding an LLM and LLB with Honours from the University of Toronto, complemented by an MA in English Literature from the same institution, and a BA in English Literature from McGill University.
