Jonathan Ptak

Jonathan Ptak, a distinguished partner within the firm's class action group, specializes in navigating complex class proceedings and commercial litigation. Jonathan's courtroom presence extends across all judicial levels in Ontario, showcasing his adeptness in both the Superior Court and the Court of Appeal.

Acknowledged by Lexpert, Chambers Canada, and Best Lawyers for his expertise in class proceedings, Jonathan's legal prowess is further recognized through his fellowship with the Litigation Counsel of America and his appointment to the Ontario Class Action Bench-Bar Liaison Committee. His legal portfolio is diverse, covering a range of class actions including those related to product liability, consumer protection, employment law, public health issues, securities misrepresentation, and more.

Jonathan played a pivotal role as co-lead counsel in Heyder v. Canada, achieving a historic $900 million settlement over allegations of sexual misconduct within the Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence. This settlement stands as one of the largest in Canadian history. His involvement in the Sino-Forest class action against Ernst & Young LLP resulted in the largest settlement with an auditor in Canada, at $117 million.

He also led the landmark Rosen v. BMO case, marking the first overtime misclassification case certified in Ontario that was not overturned on appeal. Jonathan's commercial litigation practice encompasses complex commercial disputes and pension litigation among other issues.

Before joining Koskie Minsky in 2002, Jonathan honed his skills at a large international law firm and engaged in criminal defence work at Downtown Legal Services. His academic achievements include a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto, enriched by international experience in Kuala Lumpur focusing on public health law reform.

Jonathan is a frequent speaker and author on topics related to class actions and commercial litigation, contributing significantly to the legal discourse.

His involvement in major class action cases, such as the Bell Canada Pension Plan Indexation and the Enterprise Rent-A-Car overtime claim, among others, underscores his significant impact on the legal landscape. Jonathan’s educational background is solid, with a law degree from the University of Toronto and a bachelor’s from McGill University, complementing his professional affiliations with The Advocates’ Society and the Ontario Bar Association.
