Janet Holmes

Janet Holmes has carved a niche in the realm of knowledge management, specifically targeting the Capital Markets and M&A sectors at Torys. She plays a pivotal role in keeping the firm's attorneys abreast of the evolving regulatory and legal landscapes within these areas. Janet's responsibilities extend to overseeing the development and curation of the firm's legal precedents, as well as contributing to Torys' publications on capital markets and mergers and acquisitions.

Her tenure before joining Torys includes significant positions that reflect her extensive experience and expertise in the legal and regulatory aspects of capital markets. As a Senior Vice President at Moody’s in New York City, Janet was instrumental in navigating the rating agency through the complexities of global regulation, also pioneering a knowledge management system for her team. Her career trajectory also includes impactful work at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris as a Senior Corporate Governance Specialist. Here, she was involved in the development of the OECD’s revised Principles of Corporate Governance.

Janet's legal prowess was further honed at the Ontario Securities Commission, where she contributed significantly, both as Senior Legal Counsel and Manager of International Affairs. Her expertise was recognized internationally, leading to her involvement in the International Monetary Fund’s Financial Sector Assessment Program as a securities law expert for New Zealand.

In addition to her professional roles, Janet has shared her knowledge through lectures on securities law, corporate governance, and legal research across North America and Europe, enriching the academic sphere with her practical insights.

Her educational background is as distinguished as her career, holding an International Diploma in Compliance from the International Compliance Association, an LLM in Securities from Osgoode Hall Law School, and an LLB from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Janet's membership in the Ontario bar since 1993 further attests to her legal acumen and dedication to her field.
