Jim Harbell transitioned to a counsel/advisor role at Stikeman Elliott on June 30, 2018, following an illustrious tenure as a partner. Throughout his career, he led the Project Development & Finance Group, spearheaded the Real Estate Group in Toronto, co-headed the Energy Group, and contributed as a member of the Partnership Board. His guidance spanned a vast array of sectors including real estate development, energy, and infrastructure mergers and acquisitions, as well as regulatory approvals and project finance for a diverse clientele of municipalities, public entities, and private investors.
With nearly three decades at the firm, Jim's legal acumen has been widely acknowledged. Prestigious recognitions include listings in Chambers Canada 2018 and Chambers Global 2018 as a top Energy: Power (Transactional) lawyer, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2018 for his work in Energy (Electricity), Property Development, and Infrastructure, The Legal 500 Canada 2018 in Energy: Power, and The Best Lawyers in Canada 2018 across Energy Law, Energy Regulatory Law, Environmental Law, and Real Estate Law. Notably, in 2015, The Best Lawyers in Canada named him “Lawyer of the Year” in Energy Law. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim dedicated time to several community initiatives, including serving on the Board of Governors for St. Clement’s School, participating as a clerk at Rosedale United Church, and being a board member of the Evergreen Foundation.
Jim’s departure from his partner role was met with heartfelt wishes for his continued success from colleagues who valued his collaboration and leadership. His educational credentials include an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School, obtained in 1982, and his early studies at the University of Toronto's Trinity College from 1977 to 1979. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1984.
