Peter Hamilton

Peter Hamilton holds a partnership in the Banking & Finance Group, specializing in banking and corporate finance. His focus encompasses corporate finance, project finance, the regulation of financial institutions, derivatives, structured finance, and insolvency.

Peter's regulatory work has been extensive, offering counsel to major international banks on acquiring Canadian assets, establishing Canadian operations, handling transactional matters, and navigating regulatory frameworks. He has provided expertise to Barclays Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, and many others on such matters. Domestically, Peter has advised Canadian financial institutions on regulatory issues and transactions, including significant mergers during the 1990s, and represented a Canadian bank in litigation concerning corporate governance.

In the realm of professional development, Peter has shared his knowledge on banking and financial institutions through lecturing at Queen’s University and Osgoode Hall Law School.

His areas of expertise are broad, covering financial products and services, regulatory aspects of financial services, banking and finance, restructuring and insolvency, as well as projects and infrastructure.

Peter’s academic achievements are distinguished, having earned a B.C.L. with first-class honours from the University of Oxford in 1982 and a B.C.L./LL.B. as a gold medallist from McGill University in 1980. His legal practice was formally recognized with his admission to the Ontario Bar.
