Robert, a cornerstone of Beckett's legal team, helms the firm's Sexual Abuse Department as a senior partner. His journey began in the Chatham region, leading him to the University of Western Ontario for his Bachelor of Arts in 1994, followed by a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 2000, where he graduated top of his class.
Since joining the Ontario Bar in 2002, Robert has dedicated his career to advocating for those harmed in various accidents, including motor vehicle incidents and slip and falls, as well as victims of medical malpractice and farming accidents. However, it was his involvement in the landmark case of J.R.S. v. Glendinning, which centered on the abuse of three brothers by a Roman Catholic priest, that steered his focus towards sexual abuse lawsuits. This case marked the beginning of a significant portion of his career devoted to representing survivors of sexual abuse, making him a sought-after advocate in this field.
Robert's legal expertise spans across Canada, offering representation to victims in nearly every province and territory. His ability to practice in Ontario, New Brunswick, and British Columbia, along with partial licensing in Nunavut and the Yukon, underscores his commitment to providing legal support to survivors nationwide.
Among his remarkable achievements, Robert secured the largest Canadian settlement for a victim of sexual abuse in the case of K.M.M. v. The Roman Catholic Diocese of London. Another significant victory came in 2018 with a $2.6 million jury verdict, which notably included $500,000 in punitive damages, for a sexual abuse survivor. The impact of this case was further highlighted in the TVO documentary "PREY."
Robert's advocacy extends beyond the courtroom. He has supported victims through submissions to various inquiries and legislative bodies, and has shared his expertise through guest lectures and providing resources to sexual assault centers. His commitment to justice for survivors of sexual abuse was recognized in 2012 with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
In addition to his legal career, Robert has served as a Canadian Forces Reservist since 1988, including a peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. His military service, acknowledged by his induction into the Order of Military Merit, and his involvement in pro bono work for injured veterans, reflect the discipline and dedication he brings to his legal practice.
Away from his professional duties, Robert values family time and maintains his physical fitness, balancing the demands of his career with personal well-being. His combination of legal acumen, military discipline, and compassionate advocacy makes him a formidable force in the fight for justice for survivors of sexual abuse.
