Moving From Quebec To Victoria BC

French Culture

Are you planning on moving from Quebec to Victoria BC? There are many people from Alberta and Quebec moving to Victoria, Canada to escape from the high COVID-19 rates in their communities.

I have lived on and off in Victoria for twenty years, and I have never seen so many French people here. In areas like downtown and James Bay, I see families of French people. It’s obvious that many people are moving here from Quebec.

Moving From Quebec To Victoria BC

People from Quebec To Victoria BC

I can’t be more excited that Victoria is getting more exposure to French culture. For the longest time, I knew only two French people in Victoria. They are the owners of Bon Macaron. And sadly, one of them moved to Vancouver to operate their Macaron store there.

By way of background, I’m half French and half British. Therefore I am qualified to speak about Victoria’s current culture (heavily British) and French culture. I also visited Paris last year (by myself) to force myself to speak French for a whole week.

It was funny, I was speaking to people in French, and they were speaking English to me. Go figure.

What Is French Culture?

For those in Victoria reading this blog, this is what you need to know about French culture. French people are very social and friendly, but can also be rude. This rudeness isn’t because they dislike people. It’s because they are very direct. They might say something like “what do you want?” In England, this would be very rude. But they are simply asking you what it is that you want.

French people also drink wine for lunch (important for the restaurants in Victoria.) I have always compared French culture to China. Chinese people form tight groups and enjoy drinking throughout the day.
