Are you wanting to “rate my lawyer?” A lot of attorney rating sites are not very accurate. There are a few in each country, but most are full of fake 5-star reviews.

Many of the 1-star reviews are from the law firm’s competitors. The point of a rating system for lawyers is that it tells the public if the lawyer is good or not.

If someone is looking for “immigration lawyers in NAME OF CITY,” they want to find the highest-rated ones. From there, they can think about their budget.

For example, you might find the best immigration lawyer, but can you afford them? Top lawyers charge $1000/hour. Do you need one that only costs $200?

Or are you looking for a lawyer that can leave a flat fee? The ability to “rate my lawyer” doesn’t get into the budget or if someone is the best attorney.

But it does match client expectations with the result. If someone is charging $1000/hour, and they are doing poor-quality work.

If someone overpromises and underdelivers, they deserve a 1 or 2-star rating.

The attorneys that underpromise and over-deliver, deserve a 5-star rating.

Some things you might want to talk about on the lawyer rating

What type of legal issue did you have (if you are comfortable)
Did you spend a lot of money on legal fees?
Was it worth it?
Did the lawyer respond quickly to you?
Did you feel you could leave things in your lawyer’s hands without worrying about it?
When the matter was finished, were you okay with the results? (understanding that you rarely get everything that you want in litigation)
Would you recommend the lawyer and law firm to your friends and family?

Providing this information is extremely helpful to the public. The reason we set up the ability to “rate my lawyer” was to protect the public from bad lawyers.

Good lawyers love our lawyer directory, and bad lawyers hate it. Good lawyers “claim their profile” and make sure all the information is accurate.

The bad lawyers threaten to report us to the Better Business Bureau and to file a Law Society complaint.

The reason is obvious. Bad lawyers don’t want transparency. They don’t want the public to be able to leave a 1-star review after they are scammed by the law firm.

The lawyers want to be on our lawyer rating list. They want the public to see how much people love hiring and working with their law firms.

Our company believes that the public being able to rate their lawyers will improve the legal industry. Right now, the legal market is run by the “old boys club.”

Many senior partners have grey hair, are men, and are of Caucasian background.

There is nothing wrong with that.

The issue is that the “old boys club” is not a fan of online accountability. This is something that the public demands.

With Google Reviews and Yelp, people got used to being able to pull out their phones and provide feedback.

The reality is that a lot of reviews are negative. When you go to Taco Bell and get what you wanted, you are not driven to quickly pull out your phone and leave a five-star review.

But when you go to a law firm and no work has been done on your file for a month, that makes you want to leave that one-star review.

This makes business owners nervous about getting reviews. But it’s something they need to get over.

Putting work into getting positive reviews can be a big boost for your law firm.

What Are Some Ways to Get More Reviews?

Ask your clients! The best thing to do is ask a client for a review when they are happy with you. This could happen at any stage of the legal process.

Perhaps you just did a consultation with a client, and they mention that they love how easy it was to book the consultation.

Or maybe you just did the first court appearance, and it went really well. The client says they are happy they hired you.

Ask Your Clients To Rate Their Lawyer

If you are a solicitor and just did a Will or marriage agreement for someone, ask them how it went. It’s a good idea to ask what the clients think before asking for an online review.

Obviously, if they are not happy, you don’t want to ask them.

Make it as easy as possible for them to leave a review. If you are asking for a Google review, tell them they need to be logged into Gmail.

Then provide them with the link for your Google My Business listing.

Our Rate My Lawyer Service

I have seen law firms write out a four-step process on a card and give it to clients. It’s also a good idea to email it to them. That will mean they don’t need to type out the long Google Business URL (website link.)

When your clients are leaving reviews on ClearWay Law, it’s even easier, because they don’t need to be logged into anything.

Make sure to ask your client to write a few sentences about what services you provided and the experience.

We get around twenty reviews a day that we reject. Most of the time the reviews look fake, or lazy.

If someone writes “the lawyer sucks” or “this attorney is amazing” that isn’t a useful review for the public.

Why did they suck? What was it that they did that made them amazing? What did you hire the lawyer for?

Here is an example of a good review.

“I hired Sarah Smith for a corporate law matter in Vancouver BC. I needed to set up a restaurant in Yaletown, and I needed a shareholder agreement and incorporation agreement.

Sarah wasn’t cheap, but she got the work done pretty quickly. The quality of her work was exactly what my restaurant’s investors were expecting in the shareholder agreement.”

Of course, there is no expectation that all the reviews on our website will be positive. We assume that half of the reviews will be positive, and half will be negative.

And that’s fine.

But instead of saying that a law firm sucks, or is a fraud or scam, below is something better that you can say.

“I hired Sarah Smith, an immigration lawyer in Ottawa Ontario for help getting my PR. I came to Ontario as a student, and I didn’t want to go back to my home country.

Canada is amazing and I want to stay. Sarah took a $5000 retainer from me, and I told her about the deadline to apply for PR.

However, she missed the deadline. Because of this, I had to spend $20,000 on another immigration law firm doing an appeal. I think Sarah should give me the $15,000 difference, but she said it’s my issue.”

You Are Likely Not A Psychologist

This is much better than saying a lawyer is a psychopath or fraud. If you are not a psychologist, you shouldn’t be diagnosing people with mental issues.

If you are not a judge, you shouldn’t be labelling people as frauds.

You might think you are doing more harm to the lawyer by being extreme, but really you are destroying your own credibility.

If you are able to, it’s also better if you use your real name. It’s important to speak the truth and don’t lie.

That way you don’t need to worry about defamation laws.

If the lawyer truly is bad, then just be yourself and tell the truth.

Good Versus Bad Lawyer Ratings

From Jack the Ripper: “This lawyer is a complete fraud, and they need to be thrown in jail forever. They spend all their time stealing money from clients. I heard from one of their staff that the lawyer didn’t even go to law school.”

Compare this with the following “rate my lawyer” review:

From Alistair Vigier: “I retained this lawyer to help me with filing a lawyer. I paid her the retainer, and she said she would file the notice of trial.

A month went by, and all I heard were excuses about how business she was. Eventually, I sent her an email saying she had to file the notice of trial within seven days. It had already been two months.

Reporting A Lawyer To The Law Society

When I sent this email, the lawyer freaked out and said the retainer money was a gift. When I reported it to the Law Society, they said I should file a lawsuit. There is nothing they could do.

What is the point of the Law Society if they don’t protect against lawyers like this? Do your due diligence before hiring this lawyer.”

There is no need to make the review more dramatic.

Where Should You Leave Law Firm Online Reviews?

Also, think about where you are leaving the reviews. Leaving a review on Google Business is often seen as legit. We obviously think that ClearWay Law reviews are also very legitimate.

But what about bashing a law firm on Reddit or Twitter? Will the lawyer even see it? Do people trust Twitter rants?

At least most people use their real names on Twitter. But most Reddit accounts use usernames like thefox838772. That doesn’t seem very legit.

Because otherwise how are you meant to separate the best lawyers from the worst ones? It’s impossible to get this information from the law firm’s website.

What information does a firm website tell you? It lists all their lawyers and the areas of law that they practice.

Okay, so they have five lawyers that do criminal law in Calgary. So what? Are they good?

Are three of the attorneys good, and the other two bad?

The website might tell you where they went to law school. So, is going to the University of Victoria or the University of Calgary for law school better?

How To Know If A Lawyer Is Good?

Most attorneys didn’t go to the best-known law firms, like Harvard or Yale. So how do you tell the rest of the attorneys if they are good?

Google reviews are mainly reviews for all the lawyers mixed together. That makes it confusing. If some other attorney makes a mistake, it reflects on the other attorneys.

If there is one good attorney at the firm, they might be responsible for most of the positive reviews. But if you hire one of the other four attorneys, you get a bad experience.

There needs to be a review for each lawyer. And those reviews need to be personal. There needs to be a picture of the attorney on the profile.

Rating a Lawyer Is a Personal Experience

There are a few other “rate my lawyer websites,” but most of the lawyer profiles have no picture. You can read about Lawyers.com, Lawyerratingz, and Avvo.

But back to the attorney profiles and ratings. If a lawyer is getting a bunch of 1-star reviews, what’s going to happen?

They have two choices.

Stop being a lawyer and do something else
Change the way they take care of their clients

Rate My Lawyer Conclusion

Either of the two options is great. If a bad lawyer leaves the industry, then the legal industry is better off.

If a terrible attorney becomes an okay one, then the legal market is much better.

And if a lawyer is getting a lot of 5-star reviews, we want them to get more clients. Other lawyers will notice the reviews, and how the attorney’s practice is growing.
