Michigan- A stood-up woman (Qashontae Short) sued for $10k after a failed date. An intense court hearing took place in a Michigan courtroom, where a woman was seeking a hefty $10,000 in damages from a man who had bailed on a date with her. This dramatic spectacle, captured in full on video, featured QaShontae Short, who had sought legal redress against her no-show date.
Short had brought forth a case, claiming in her lawsuit, filed in Genesee County’s 67th District Court, that her failed date had resulted in emotional distress. To compound her hurt, the date was especially important to her as it marked the birthday of her deceased mother.
Virtual hearing via Zoom
This unusual case was addressed in a virtual hearing via Zoom, which lasted just under ten minutes. Judge Herman Marable Jr., informed Short that she had erred in her filing location, stating that Qashontae Short’s claim should have been directed to the circuit court instead.
Upon addressing the defendant, the Judge inquired whether he would be serving as his own legal representative. The man expressed his confusion over the whole proceedings, explaining his expectation that the case would simply be dismissed.

He detailed the brief nature of their interaction – a singular date – and expressed his disbelief at the ensuing $10,000 lawsuit. He went so far as to express his belief that the proceedings were wasting the judge’s time.
The judge then informed the man that to achieve his desired outcome of dismissal, he would have to formally lodge a motion to that effect. Since he did not file the motion, the case would go ahead.
This is the problem with being self-represented, many people assume things will just work out in the court system. They rarely do.

In a heightened exchange, Qashontae Short claimed that her paperwork would provide evidence of perjury should the man lie in his response. The judge, slightly raising his voice, probed whether Short truly comprehended the meaning of perjury. Short, not to be subdued, retorted loudly, taking offence at the perceived slight to her intelligence.
Tensions peaked as the judge discarded his face shield while Qashontae Short’s shouting persisted. The judge told her not to talk when he is talking on multiple occasions, striving to regain control over the escalating situation.

The footage presented portrays the accused in a visibly distressed state, his hand covering his face, later to be seen with his head bowed and his palm hiding his forehead.
The resolution was clear, as Judge Short remarked that the matter would be escalated to another court and judge to deal with. I’m guessing the judge just wanted to get off the case.
As this dialogue was winding down, Judge Marable muted the virtual court session, initiating the process to have the case escalated to the higher court.
The ruling of the case was officially dismissed and was subsequently moved to the judicial authority of the 7th Circuit Court this past Thursday, as per the court’s official documentation.
A look into the archives of the Michigan District Court and Circuit Court reveals a lengthy litigation history associated with her. Over the past twenty years, she’s left her mark in both court jurisdictions, filing no less than a dozen suits, with the earliest on record from the turn of the millennium in 2000.
Serious allegations of assault and harassment
At the start of the year 2020, a hefty lawsuit of $300 million was lodged against the Flint Police Department in Michigan under her name. The suit contained serious allegations of assault and harassment by numerous police officers. However, the judge overseeing the case deemed it fit to dismiss the case.
In a different case, the telecommunications giant AT&T found itself on the receiving end of her legal pursuits. In October 2020, she initiated a suit in the Sheboygan County Circuit Court in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Yet the digital court archives tell a tale of a missed court hearing on her part, leading to the eventual dismissal of the case.
