Feb 22, 2024I purchased a quaint little property a couple of years back in the Coral Gables area, drawn in by the lush green streets and historical landmarks. It's a fixer-upper, but it's mine and I've poured a lot of love (and cash) into making it a home.
Current Predicament: Recently, I've been notified by the city that part of my property is encroaching on a new development project they're planning – something about expanding the Venetian Pool, can you believe it? They're talking about eminent domain and I'm way out of my depth here.
Question: What rights do I have in this situation? I've heard horror stories about eminent domain where folks get a fraction of their property's worth. I've invested not just money, but my heart into this home. Is there a way to negotiate a better deal or even contest their claim? And if push comes to shove, what's the best strategy to ensure I'm not left out on a limb?
Extra Info: I also run a small boutique from my home, selling locally sourced crafts and artworks. It's not just my home, it's my livelihood. Does this factor into my situation at all?
