dude starts causing a ruckus Albuquerque, New Mexico

I'm reaching out from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and things are a bit twisted right now. So, here's the deal:

This all started a few nights ago over at the Launchpad on Central Ave – you know, the spot that's always buzzing with bands and all. My buddy and I were just hanging out, listening to some live tunes, minding our own business. The night was all cool and dandy until things took a south turn real quick. Out of nowhere, this random dude starts causing a ruckus, throwing punches left and right. It was chaos, man. My buddy, trying to be the good Samaritan, jumps in to break it up, but ends up getting clocked pretty hard himself. Long story short, the cops show up, and in the confusion, they think my friend's the instigator. Next thing we know, he's being handcuffed and charged with assault. Total mess, right?

Now, here's where it gets complicated. My friend's got a clean record, never been in trouble before, not even a speeding ticket. But he's freaking out thinking this is gonna ruin his life, job prospects, the whole nine yards. We've got a couple of witnesses who saw the whole thing and are willing to vouch that my buddy was just trying to help, but we're not sure how solid that'll hold up.

So, what I'm trying to figure out is, what's the best move here? How does one go about defending against these charges, especially when it's a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time? And what kind of consequences could my friend be looking at if things don't swing in his favor? Is there any chance this could get dismissed, or are we looking at having to fight this tooth and nail?

I'd really appreciate any advice you could sling our way. Thanks a ton for taking the time to hear me out.
